Most Common Reasons a Washer Won’t Drain
Clogged pump filter Most modern washers have a pump filter that catches lint, coins, and small items before they reach the pump. When it gets clogged, water cannot drain properly. On front-load washers, the filter is usually located behind a small panel at the bottom front of the machine.
Kinked or clogged drain hose The drain hose runs from the back of the washer to the drain pipe. If it is kinked, pinched against the wall, or clogged with debris, water backs up and stays in the drum.
Failed drain pump If the filter is clear and the hose is fine, the drain pump itself may have failed. You will often hear a humming noise when the washer tries to drain but cannot. This requires a technician to replace.
Lid switch failure (top-load washers) Top-load washers will not spin or drain if the lid switch is broken. The machine thinks the lid is open and stops the cycle as a safety measure.
Control board issue Less common, but a faulty control board can interrupt the drain cycle. This is typically diagnosed after ruling out the simpler causes above.
