When a garage door opener stops working, the cause is often simple. Here are the eight most common reasons we find on garage door service calls in Dallas–Fort Worth, starting with the easiest to check.

1. Remote or keypad batteries

If the wall button works but the remote doesn’t, replace the remote battery first.

2. Lock or vacation mode is on

Many wall control panels have a lock button that disables remotes. Check for a lock light on the wall control.

3. Safety sensors are misaligned or dirty

The two small sensors near the bottom of the door must “see” each other. If the door starts to close and reverses, or the opener light blinks, clean the lenses and make sure both sensors point directly at each other.

4. The manual release was pulled

If someone pulled the red emergency release cord, the door is disconnected from the opener. The motor will run, but the door won’t move until it is reconnected.

5. No power

Check that the opener is plugged in and that the outlet works. Garage outlets are often on a GFCI that may have tripped.

6. Limit settings are off

If the door reverses right after touching the floor, or doesn’t close all the way, the travel limits may need adjustment.

7. Stripped drive gear

If you hear the motor humming but the chain or belt doesn’t move, a plastic drive gear inside the opener may be stripped. This is a common repair on older openers.

8. Broken spring

If the opener strains and the door barely lifts, the problem may not be the opener at all. It may be a broken spring. Don’t keep running the opener.

FAQ

Why does my garage door go down and then back up?

Usually misaligned or dirty safety sensors, or something blocking the door’s path. Limit settings can also cause it.

Why does my opener hum but the door doesn’t move?

Common causes are a stripped drive gear, a disconnected door, or a broken spring.

Is it worth repairing an old garage door opener?

Many repairs are affordable. If your opener is very old or lacks modern safety features, replacement may be the better value.
