If your dryer is running full cycles but clothes are still damp, something is wrong. In Texas where dryers run year-round, this problem is both frustrating and costly. Here is what causes it and what to do.
Why Your Dryer Takes Too Long to Dry
Clogged dryer vent — the #1 cause A blocked dryer vent is the most common reason a dryer takes multiple cycles to dry clothes. When lint blocks the vent, hot moist air cannot escape and the drum cannot dry effectively. If you cannot remember the last time your dryer vent was cleaned, this is almost certainly the problem.
Overloaded drum Overloading prevents hot air from circulating around clothes. Dry large loads in two smaller loads for better results and less wear on the machine.
Failed heating element If the dryer runs but produces little or no heat, the heating element has likely failed. This is one of the most common dryer repairs in DFW. The drum spins normally but clothes come out damp because there is no heat to evaporate moisture.
Faulty thermostat The cycling thermostat regulates the temperature inside the dryer. When it fails, the dryer may not reach the proper temperature, causing clothes to take longer to dry than normal.
Worn drum seals The felt seals around the drum door and front panel keep hot air inside the drum. When they wear out, heat escapes and drying efficiency drops significantly.
Gas supply issue (gas dryers) If you have a gas dryer and it runs but does not heat, the gas supply valve or igniter may have failed. A technician should diagnose gas dryer heating issues.
The Texas Factor
Texas summers make dryer efficiency even more important. High outdoor humidity can affect how well dryer vents expel moisture, especially on humid summer days. Homes with longer vent runs — common in larger DFW homes — are more susceptible to reduced drying efficiency during humid months.
