Why Your Washer Is Shaking Violently
Unbalanced load The most common cause — and the easiest fix. An unbalanced load causes the drum to spin unevenly. Stop the cycle, redistribute the clothes evenly around the drum, and restart. Never wash a single heavy item like a comforter by itself — add towels to balance the load.
Unleveled machine All four legs of the washer must be level and firmly on the floor. Use a level to check. Adjust the legs by turning them clockwise to lower or counterclockwise to raise. Most washers have self-locking legs that tighten once adjusted.
Worn shock absorbers or suspension rods Front-load washers use shock absorbers and top-load washers use suspension rods to dampen drum movement. When these wear out, the drum bounces and shakes excessively during the spin cycle. This is one of the most common washer repairs we perform on front-load machines in DFW.
Worn drum bearings If the shaking is accompanied by a loud grinding or roaring noise during the spin cycle, the drum bearings are likely worn. This is a more involved repair but extends the life of the machine significantly.
Damaged drum spider arm Common on LG and Samsung front-load washers, a cracked or broken spider arm causes the drum to wobble violently. This repair requires drum removal and is typically diagnosed when the washer makes a loud banging noise during spin.
Machine not on a solid surface Washing machines on second floors or on soft flooring amplify vibration significantly. Anti-vibration pads placed under the machine can reduce noise and movement.
