A refrigerator that starts making unusual noises is one of the most common appliance concerns we hear from Dallas homeowners. The good news is that most noises point to a specific problem — and most are fixable without replacing the unit.

What Different Refrigerator Noises Mean

Loud humming or buzzing A loud hum is often normal — refrigerators hum when the compressor runs. However, if the hum becomes unusually loud or changes in pitch, it could indicate a failing compressor or a dirty condenser fan motor. A dirty condenser fan is one of the most common causes of loud humming in DFW homes, especially in homes with pets.

Clicking sounds Clicking when the refrigerator tries to start — especially if it clicks repeatedly without the compressor running — is a classic sign of a failing start relay. The start relay is a small inexpensive part, but without it the compressor cannot start. This is a same-day repair in most cases.

Rattling or vibrating Rattling is often caused by the refrigerator sitting unevenly on the floor, items on top of the fridge, or a loose drain pan underneath. However, rattling can also indicate a failing condenser fan or evaporator fan blade hitting ice buildup.

Knocking or banging A knocking sound during the defrost cycle is usually the sound of ice falling into the drain pan — this is normal. However, loud banging during normal operation can indicate a loose compressor mount or a damaged fan blade.

Squealing or squeaking A high-pitched squeal is typically caused by a worn evaporator fan motor bearing. This noise usually comes from inside the freezer compartment and gets louder when you open the freezer door.

Gurgling or dripping sounds Gurgling is normal — it is the sound of refrigerant flowing through the system. Dripping sounds during the defrost cycle are also normal. However, if you hear continuous dripping, check for a clogged defrost drain.

When to Call a Technician

If the noise is accompanied by any of these symptoms, call a technician immediately:

  • The refrigerator is not maintaining temperature
  • Food is spoiling faster than normal
  • There is water pooling under or inside the fridge
  • The noise has become progressively louder over days or weeks
